Description: The Sudanese Armed Forces managed to capture another town in Sudan’s North Kordofan province, pushing the RSF further west and denying them access to key highways and supply routes. The latest fighting unfolded in and around the city of Sodari, which is considered as a key regional logistical hub as it borders North Darfur to the west, West Kordofan to the southwest and the West Bara locality to the south. The RSF still exercises considerable control over the Kordofan province, surrounding the city of El – Obeid. The SAF managed to achieve critical field success within the past couple of months, forcing defections in the RSF’s ranks and keeping the group’s advances contained in the Kordofan province.
Impact: SAF’s tactical success in the Kordofan province is unlikely to translate into strategic gains as the SAF and the RSF remain deadlocked across the wider frontline in the civil war in the country, while ceasefire or peace proposals have largely stalled. Recent RSF defections highly likely demonstrate significant levels of the group’s internal fracturing, with groups of fighters surrendering or defecting on the SAF’s side. Both the SAF and the RSF have been marginalized by major global powers such as the US and are likely dependent on regional support. Considering that no ceasefire or peace proposals have been so far nominally materialized, the civil war is likely to continue in the mid to long – term period.
