Romania: SPD and AUR Push No Confidence Vote Against Prime Minister

Description: Romania’s Social Democrats (SPD) and the far – right Alliance for Uniting Romanians (AUR) have officially created a joined initiative to instigate a no – confidence vote against prime minister Ilie Bolojan. The prime minister has recently come under scrutiny for presenting severe austerity measures to reduce the country’s budget deficit. SPD’s leader Sorin Grindeanu was accused by the prime minister of forming a coalition with the far – right to topple democracy in the country. AUR has recently upscaled in popularity as George Simion, the defeated presidential candidate, aims to become the country’s next prime minister. Centrist president, Nicusor Dan, could be forced to form another government if the no confidence vote passes on 05 May.

Impact: SPD and AUR’s initiative still largely depends on securing the majority 233 votes to bring about the removal of the prime minister, which is likely to decrease the country’s short to mid – term economic outlook and incentivize further political divisions. Bolojan could still survive the vote in which case he would preside over a minority government which is likely to have immediate challenges in presenting tax reforms in order to access EU’s recovery funds. Political instability in the country likely compromises Romania’s standing as the eastern pillar of defensive cooperation and a logistical hub for facilitating support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
