Description: Peru’s police raided the home of the former election chief, Piero Corvetto, after he controversially resigned from his post earlier last week following stalled election results. Technical difficulties reported by voters and the uncertainty with the ballots positioned Corvetto under severe scrutiny. He denounced any illegal activities in the initial election and stated that his resignation was in order to inspire more confidence in the runoff which is scheduled for 15 May. Keiko Fujimori leads the polls with approximately 17% of the votes followed by left – wing lawmaker Roberto Sanchez and former mayor of Lima, Rafael Lopez Aliaga who garnered 12.3% and 11.9% of the votes respectively.

Impact: Peru’s political crisis is likely to transpire towards more domestic instability regardless of the election results. The country’s constant revolving of governance has prompted the halt of a fighter jet agreement with the US and forced the election chief to resign which likely indicates immediate political coercion and pressure on the interim government from the most prospective presidential candidates. Public trust in political leadership is severely eroded in the country, which likely indicates that the runoff election would be accompanied by public unrest while in the period leading to the election, political tensions in the country are likely to be on the rise.
