Description: Nigerian female diplomat was diagnosed with the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus after arriving in Nigeria from Uganda. The local doctors stated that the woman experienced a multiple organ failure within days of being diagnosed while 12 day passed since was officially infected. She had contact with more than 44 people who are being tracked down by Nigerian health authorities. Nigeria is the second country after Kenya to confirm a case of Ebola which is currently rampant in the DR Congo where more than 9 thousand cases have been detected with more than 4 thousand deaths. The African CDC called for an urgency meeting on a government level, where health officials could discuss and prepare for a more integrated approach towards the spreading disease on the continent.
Impact: The Ebola healthcare crisis is highly likely to spread across other countries in Africa in the short to mid – term period. Most countries in central, west and southeast Africa are under severe humanitarian, economic and security conditions which likely facilitates the fast spread of the disease through national borders. The weak infrastructure, lack of international aid and coordinated response on high government levels are likely to enable further expansion of the disease in the short to mid – term. Conflict beholden countries are likely to be more susceptible towards large – scale spreading, since wartime conditions, disruption of emergency services and lack of resources limit the scope of response to the healthcare crisis.
