Description: Leaders from the seven countries met in Alberta, Canada where global security was abruptly introduced as the main agenda in line with the recent escalation of the Israel – Iran war. Canadian Prime Minister Carney managed to ascertain a one-on-one meeting with Trump which reportedly resulted in a potential trade deal in order to ease up tensions between the neighbors. Trump also met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and concluded the trade agreement with UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The US President would miss meeting Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelenskyy and Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum, meetings which were deemed of high value in addressing issues with both countries, on the G7 agenda. Trump left the Summit supposedly to address the Middle Eastern crisis where he scheduled an emergency meeting of the US National Security Council. The leaders at the end of the first day singed a joint statement condemning Iran as the greatest threat in the Middle East, justifying Israel’s right to defend itself and calling for immediate de-escalation of the war.

Impact: The G7 Summit underscores the entrenched divisions between the global leaders on geostrategic and geopolitical questions and the low level of relevance the G7 Summit starts to represent. European leaders quickly joined the US in offering support for Israel’s military actions in the Middle East while appealing to US President Trump who has effectively conditioned the transatlantic partnership under his tariff policies. The meeting showcased that Europe cannot be unified in strategy and its disjointed approach towards globally threatening crises offers no concrete resolutions, making the continent even less relevant on the geopolitical stage. The Summit has turned from a high – level meeting of coordination and close cooperation on integral global issues towards a diplomatically deteriorating leadership meeting. The absence of political and diplomatic innovation from the G7 leaders indicates lack of long – term strategies and unconceptualized responses of resolute determination when faced with multi – layered crises such as the war in Ukraine and the Middle East.
