Description: Trump’s anti – immigration policies have substantially escalated after the White House announced that the President planned to additionally deploy members of the US National Guard in Portland and Chicago. Shortly after ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents encountered protesters in Chicago, Trump authorized the deployment of approximately 300 National Guard troops, while Illinois Governor, JB Pritzker, stated that a lawsuit has been filed against the deployment of the National Guard and accused President Trump of manufacturing a domestic crisis. Local residents in Chicago have stated that in almost every case, the National Guard or the ICE agents have exercised excessive force in apprehending people, while legal due process has been subverted as more often than not, individuals weren’t served with proper warrants and were indiscriminately arrested regardless of their legal status in the country. Trump has threatened against stalling his anti – immigration raids by courts and Democrat governors and mayors stating that he would invoke the Insurrection Act from 1807, which allows the President to use the military forces of the country to quell unrest.

Impact: The excessive deployment of ICE agents and Homeland security officers coupled with the illegal presence of the US National Guard across several federal states constitutes a domestic civil and political crisis in the US which is yet to reach its pinnacle. Trump has enforced illegal detainment to illustrate his dominion over political power in states and cities where the majority of the political establishment is from the Democratic party. The operations by ICE and the National Guard more often than not have overwhelmed local law enforcement capacities or superseded jurisdictional and operational power, causing protests and other forms of civil unrest which are continuously escalating. Some legal instruments like district courts have been used to postpone the measures, however, the domestic crisis in the US is expected to further escalate in volume as National Guard troops are being deployed across several states without previous legal or security basis, which stokes tensions and causes unprecedented civil unrest adding to the current crisis with the deadlocked Government.
