Description: Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have targeted a mosque and a Saudi – led hospital in the besieged city of El Fasher in the Darfur province, killing more than 13 people and injuring additional 16. El Fasher is being considered as the last stronghold of Sudan’s Armed Forces (SAF) and has been besieged by the RSF which have strengthened their positions by building earthen walls on the periphery of the city, encircling it with checkpoints that stretched for over 57 kilometers. RSF has intensified attacks using sophisticated equipment such as drones and rockets in recent months attempting to capture the entire Darfur province and oust the military from El Fasher. The UN humanitarian affairs office (OCHA) has issued a statement claiming that more than half a million people were displaced in the province, many of whom lived in El Fasher.
Impact: The civil war in Sudan continues to wage on as both the RSF and the SAF have renounced calls for negotiations and denounced the quadrilateral peace plan proposed by the US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. RSF keeps sophisticating the means in their war against the SAF, in final attempts to completely control the Darfur province and push the military forces back east, which would effectively enable the RSF control over larger swathes of territory. The humanitarian corridors in the country are closed off due to the high level of violence while the humanitarian crisis continues to rapidly deteriorate with atrocities occurring on a daily basis. With the peace initiative effectively dead on arrival due to the lack of diplomatic initiative and exerted pressure on both sides, the war shows no signs of slowing down with neither side currently possessing the capacities to military overwhelm the other under the current constellation of power forces.
