Sudan: RSF Continues Drone Campaign with Peace Efforts Stalling

Description: The Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have conducted yet another attack on the besieged city of El – Fasher in the region of Darfur. Local health department sources have reported that at least six people were killed in the drone attack on Al – Daraja neighborhood while 10 other were severely injured. Recent developments have diminished the prospects of peace initially proposed by the US, Egypt, Saudi Arabi and the UAE, since General Burhan, the leader of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has vigorously rejected the US peace initiative and vowed to keep on fighting. The RSF on the other hand, has substantially increased its aerial assault capabilities with drones from Iranian and Chinese origin being used in the recent attacks mostly concentrated on the Darfur region where the rebel group attempts to expel the military from its last known regional stronghold. The country is also experiencing one of the worst cholera outbreaks in recent years and a devastating humanitarian and refugee crisis.

Impact: Sudan’s civil war further intensifies with the warring parties renouncing international peace efforts and putting their warfare weight and aspirations behind their international supporters and financiers. The diplomatic efforts by the US, Egypt, UAE and Saudi Arabia require more intensified pressure on both sides in order to materialize. Neither side currently has a constructive incentive to abandon their military aspirations which are threatening territorial division of the country while the existence of two parallel governments further intensifies that prospect. The delivery of humanitarian aid in the country is impeded by the constant ground and aerial skirmishes which are causing massive loss of human life, disease spreading and intensified refugee crisis. The probability of a sudden breakthrough or peace negotiations remains low with neither side showing intention to approach peace negotiations or any form of reconciliation.
