Description: The Sudanese military has accused forces under the command of the Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar of supporting the Rapid Support Forces in conducting border attacks in the trilateral border region between Sudan, Libya and Egypt. The attacks happened in the trilateral border region north of the civil war’s main frontlines such as the city of Al – Fashir, the capital of the North Darfur province. Forces aligned under Khalifa Haftar command are jointly supported by Egypt and the UAE, which separately support the Sudanese military and the RSF forces in the civil war. The army withdrew from the region citing operational difficulties in maintaining crucial tactical positions.
Impact: Libya’s militant involvement in the Sudanese civil war aggravates the conflict as the RSF continues to advance gaining large swathes of territory and pressuring the Sudanese military. The warring parties continue to engage further destabilizing the region signaling continued warfare and inciting larger dimensions of the already devastating humanitarian crisis. The conflicting parties are supported by larger foreign actors through financing, military and logistical support disabling the actions by international organizations such as the UN to have any impact on the security and humanitarian crises in the country. The potential of direct involvement from Libya which has also experienced recent upsurges in internal conflicts between the opposing governments in the country, could adhere to the already destabilized situation in the northeastern parts of the African continent.
