Description: Nepali President, Ram Chandra Paudel, has officially accepted the resignation from the Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, following two days of spiraling violent protests in the country. The protests have rapidly escalated as the death toll officially rose to 22, while 150 other people were severely injured. Demonstrators lit several buildings on fire, including the country’s Parliament and the private houses of the ministers as the representatives were evacuated to a secure location. Several thousand protesters looted private houses and destroyed private and state property as their actions reflected the deep-rooted systemic issues in the country, primarily originating from high levels of corruption and poor governance. The army late on 09 Sep was deployed to the streets in order to subvert more violence as the leading political parties are expected to choose the country’s next Prime Minister. The crisis originally stemmed from Nepal’s social media censorship, however, it quickly unraveled towards a broad scale of anti – government movement.

Impact: Nepal’s anti – government protests are expected to persist in the mid – term period, as the government scrambles to establish a reformist governmental echelon which would engage the young demonstrators in dialogue and tackle the country’s systemic issues. The deployment of the army as a heightened security measure was deemed necessary as the security situation on the ground rapidly deteriorated with the police losing control to the rioters. The strong anti – government sentiment within the sporadic civil movement signals that without concrete reforms from the country’s two largest political establishments such as the Nepali Congress party and the Communist party, violence and civil unrest would persevere, potentially causing nationwide collapse of the political and constitutional system.
