Description: Former Justice Minister, Sushila Karki, was appointed as the country’s interim Prime Minister, following a week of violent civil unrest which toppled the incumbent government and left a death toll of 51. President Ram Chandra Paudel announced the government’s dissolution and stated that Karki would govern in an interim caretaking capacity, while new elections were scheduled to take place in Mar 2026. Karki would be immediately faced with challenges such as establishing order, restoring the public trust in the government and tackling corruption and unemployment. Relative order and peace returned to the streets of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu as the military gradually withdrew, transferring public safety responsibilities to the police.

Impact: Nepal’s political and civil crisis is slowly reaching its conclusion with interim Prime Minister Karki emerging as the most competent solution to resolve the country’s ailing issues and address the demands from the protesters. The gradual withdrawal by the military indicates that the possibility of renewed unrest is currently low, while the interim Prime Minister is expected to deliver concrete and practical solutions which would tackle Nepal’s domestic issues. The elections scheduled for Mar would demonstrate the country’s resolve to transform politically and transfer demands into concrete political solutions.
