Description: Gen Z demonstrations in Morocco have evolved into a coordinated and sophisticated civil movement supported by anonymous leadership and clear demands outlining political reforms. After the deadly incidents from last week, the protesters through a voting poll in their Discord group have decided to suspend the demonstrations for a day, however, they announced the protest would continue on 09 Oct in several cities across Morocco such as Rabat, Tangier, Casablanca, Fez, Berkane and 16 other smaller cities. Several members of the protest movement have stated that considering the large number of supporters, which recently surpassed 250 thousand people, security forces and youth political parties have attempted to infiltrate the movement in order to subvert its objective. In the interim, the Moroccan government has signed an agreement for strengthening the country’s anti – corruption mechanisms between the National Authority for Probity, Prevention and the Fight Against Corruption (INPLCC), the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) and the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST). The protesters are demanding fundamental reforms in several socio – economic sectors, focusing on healthcare, education and corruption.
Impact: The Gen Z protests in Morocco have started to face considerable scrutiny from the security forces and other political entities, as their organizations have supplemented the divisions and politicization of the civil movement. The demonstrators, however, currently remain unified in their objectives as they successfully resist the pressure and continue to mobilize against the government. The signing of the anti – corruption agreement for enhancing cooperation between several governmental bodies is just a pretext and a frail attempt to dissuade the protesters from their reformist intentions. The demonstrations are currently suspended due to the deaths of several members of the movement during last week’s protest but are expected to continue by the end of this week with similar if not elevated intensity.
