Description: The Gen – Z civil movement in Kenya has announced nationwide expansion of the protests, causing police forces to block key traffic routes and seal – off large areas in the country’s capital Nairobi. Protests erupted late last month as a result of the public disapproval of the government’s leadership and policies and the introduction of new tax increasing legislature. On 25 Jun, more than 19 people were killed and dozens were injured in heavy clashes with the police forces, who used live munition in suppressing the protesters. Groups of agitators have reportedly infiltrated the protest movement and instigated the escalation of violence while plunging the protesters on violent collision course with the law enforcement services.
Impact: Kenya’s security situation has been severely aggravated with the announced countrywide protests, threatening to push the country into a prolonged period of political crisis. The protests began as a peaceful demonstration against the government’s methods of rule which have led the country towards substantial economic decline, elevated cost of living expenses and poor socio – economic conditions in general. Recent reports signal the expansion of the civil anti – government movement, while the presence of agitators within the demonstrations would cause further expansion of the confrontations between the protesters and the police forces. No initiatives regarding official communication have been published, with the government’s approval ratings declining rapidly. With the announcement of nationwide organized protests, law enforcement capacities would be strained causing the emergence of several security flashpoints countrywide where violence clashes would probably escalate.
