Israel – Hamas War: UN Security Council Adopts Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan

Description: The UN Security Council has passed a resolution approving Trump’s 20 – point peace plan for the Gaza Strip. The vote passed with major support from the countries worldwide with China and Russia abstaining. Hamas has stated that the resolution didn’t envision the creation of a Palestinian state and instead of nurturing the interests of the Palestinian people it forced an agenda that endangered the people in the Gaza Strip. The resolution also approved the formation of the Board of Peace and the International Stabilization Force (ISF) as part of the plan to achieve a long-lasting peace in the Strip, points which Hamas opposed stating that the ISF could unintentionally be dragged into the war if it starts supporting either side or forcefully attempts to disarm Hamas. Mounting issues still remained wide open, such as the official recognition of the Palestinian state, the issue with Hamas’ disarmament and the withdrawal of the Israeli military from the initial yellow line outlined in the provisions of the ceasefire.

Impact: The adoption of Trump’s 20 – point peace plan in the UN although a significant step towards recognizing the potential peace prospects, still remains distant from the objective circumstances that are threatening the longevity of the peace process. Hamas has most recently entrenched itself even further into the Gaza Strip, reasserting control over the territory and signaling reluctance with any disarmament efforts. The Board of Peace plan also represents a disputed point, since credible governing individuals bar the ones from the Palestinian Authority and Hamas would be difficult to find and insert as the governing authority of the enclave. The ISF also represents a significant problem since its incorporation as a peacekeeping force would most definitely be subjected to modifications while troops from certain countries, such as Turkey for example have been banned by Israel. The peace process would need continuous pressure, presence and diplomatic insistence by the US in order to succeed in the long – term, despite the relatively successful start.
