Israel and Syria: Israeli Military Conducts Raids in Southern Syria

Description: Israeli soldiers were reported to have conducted ground raids in the village of Beit Jinn in southern Syria. Spokespeople for the Israeli Ministry of Defense claimed that IDF soldiers came under fire from the village and were forced to intervene further stating that members of the Lebanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood operated in the village. The raids were complemented by airstrikes and resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, while 6 Israeli soldiers were wounded. The Syrian Foreign Ministry labeled the attack a war crime and reiterated previous statements that Syria didn’t represent a security threat to Israel. Additional statements from the Israeli Ministry of Defense claimed that Hamas and other collaborative terrorist organizations in the region were rebuilding their networks and supply lines necessitating the raids by the Israeli military forces.

Impact: Israel’s intervention on the ground in Syria supported by airstrikes although not uncommon, substantially deteriorates the security situation in the region and subverts any peace initiatives for disarmament and normalization of bilateral ties. Israel’s interventions in Syria have become more frequent since the fall of Bashar al Assad last year and supported the country’s argument that Syria remains to be a flashpoint for terrorist and extremist activities which are threatening Israel’s security. Syria under Ahmed Al Sharaa started a slow path of reconstruction and the government is still in a process of consolidating power and establishing stable and legitimate governing mechanisms across the fragmented country. Israel has continued to militarily engage regional adversaries which risks the faltering of peace platforms such as the Gaza ceasefire and the demilitarization of Hezbollah in Lebanon. The fractured security state of Syria, coupled with the consistent ground and aerial incursions by Israel undermines the power dynamics and risks plunging the region into a revolving cycle of violence and conflict.
