Burkina Faso: NGO Workers Arrested on Espionage Charges

By October 8, 2025October 9th, 2025No Comments

Description: Burkina Faso’s Minister of Interior, Mahamadou Sana, informed the public that 8 members of a Dutch – based NGO were arrested on charges of espionage. The NGO in question was the International NGO Safety Organization (INSO), which in the past provided security information to aid workers in the country and the continent. INSO has categorically denied the charges by the government and stated that its members were in the country facilitating the release of their director which has been detained since Jul this year. The members of the organization were citizens of France, the Czech Republic, Mali and Burkina Faso, and were accused of providing sensitive classified information to foreign powers.

Impact: Burkina Faso is one of the country’s led by the military junta of Captain Ibrahim Traore which much alike Mali and Niger, has had consistent issued with militant uprisings and struggling economy. Ever since toppling the government in 2022 Traore distanced his country from its previous colonialist European partners such as France and courted Russian private mercenaries and direct ties to the Kremlin as a substitute. The persecution of the NGO workers represents a measure which aligns the political system in the country with its Russian partners and eliminates any potential ties to western – sponsored organizations. NGOs in African countries, despite being exploited by foreign intelligence services, have a crucial role in facilitating public services, enabling aid programs and launching economic development platforms. Similar operations would be conducted in the future in line with the increased level of Russian influence on the African continent as a long – term strategy by the Kremlin for access to crucial resources and operational theaters in Africa.
