Description: Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, chaired the 2025 BRICS Summit which was marked by internal divisions and economic pressure from the US tariffs. Leaders and foreign ministers from other member countries, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also attended, as the alliance of anti – western countries issued the joint statement, highlighting unison regarding several global issues. The joint statement emphasized the condemnation of the US – Israeli aggression on Iran, criticized the US trade practices and the constant threat upon the global economy from Trump’s tariff policies. The joint statement also condemned Israel’s war in Gaza and NATO’s elevated military spending of 5%, calling for severe de-escalation of global conflicts and resorting towards diplomatic solutions, while not criticizing Russia’s war in Ukraine directly. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend the Summit for the first time in its two – decades long history.

Impact: The BRICS Summit in Brazil, much alike the NATO Summit in the Netherlands, marked significant internal shifts between the member countries within the global adversarial alliances, despite the public portrayal of unity. The transformative divisions were personified through the adoption of unilateral means of conducting foreign policy and prioritization of national before global interests. The Summit effectively announced the deterioration of the BRICS Alliance as the most prominent countermeasure for the US global expansionism. With Trump focusing the US foreign and domestic policies towards conservatism and the BRICS showing significant signs of political and diplomatic decline, member countries would be more focused towards largely adopting independent and multilateral methods of developing strategic partnerships.
