Iran, the US and Israel: Trump Declares War Effectively Over as Hormuz Blockade Continues

Description: After the most recent Senate hearings, US president Trump has declared that hostilities with Iran have been terminated, however, the naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would remain. Trump was quick to renounce Iran’s latest proposal which stipulated a gradual reopening of the Strait, confinement of the country’s nuclear program and even relocating the uranium stockpile to a third country for distillation. The US President additionally announced that US naval forces in the region would facilitate the freedom of navigation through the Strait under operation Project Freedom. Under the latest revisions by the Senate, Trump stated that he did not need approval to resume military operations as the 60 – day period had already expired, a conclusion that a broad spectrum of lawmakers disagreed with. Israel continued its offensive in both Lebanon and Gaza, violating both ceasefires which made the US – Iran negotiations that more difficult to happen. Trump also mentioned that the military option remained on the table as intelligence and military officials reportedly briefed the president of the options last week. Pakistan has remained the mediator and reportedly opened six additional border crossings with Iran to facilitate land transportation of Iranian goods prevented by the Hormuz blockade.

Impact: The current US strategy pursues both economic pressure and threats of military action which effectively translates towards putting Iran in a more precarious position and forcing it to concede further compromises regarding several points of contention with the nuclear issue remaining a top priority. Trump’s rejection of Iran’s fairly reasonable negotiations proposal is likely an ultimate defiance as the president is convinced in the advantageous position regarding the negotiations. Project Freedom would likely raise military tensions as Iran is expected to respond by force to any US naval incursions in the Strait. Israel’s continued military operations in Lebanon and Gaza, continue to inflict mass civilian casualties, infrastructure devastation and likely pose one of the major obstacles towards continued diplomatic engagement. Pakistan’s land corridors are unlikely to supplant Iran’s need for maritime trade, although they could provide the country with an intermittent respite from the US economic pressure. The negotiations are effectively frozen, with the option for resuming military operations remaining wide open in the mid – term period.
