Description: Sudan’s Armed Forces (SAF) have resorted towards resuming airstrikes using MiG fighter jets in the present strategic battlefield of Kordofan. Airstrikes were reportedly conducted in Al – Dulaymah, Al – Hujayrtat and Birno areas where crucial RSF positions were targeted. Kordofan is currently the major flashpoint in the conflict where significant oil reserves are present while control over key logistical routes could prove crucial for military prevalence in the short to mid – term. Recent ground confrontations have resulted in massive losses on both sides as neither the RSF nor the SAF possess the ability to overwhelm each other militarily.

Impact: SAF’s airstrikes are most likely a prelude towards enhanced ground operations in the upcoming period as the battle for Kordofan is expected to intensify. The use of fighter jets is unusual as both warring parties have shifted towards drone warfare to achieve aerial supremacy within the last year which most likely indicates the SAF is betting on the RSF’s reduced drone and aerial capabilities. The civil war is likely to escalate in the upcoming period with intensified ground confrontations and enhanced aerial strikes on both sides. The humanitarian situation is likely to further deteriorate despite recent initiatives as both the RSF and SAF hold a firm grip on humanitarian corridors while continued warfare makes the delivery of aid extremely difficult.
