Sudan: Military Rejects Compromising with the RSF

Description: Sudan’s military General, Abdel Fatah al – Burhan, has rejected any indications that Sudan’s military would compromise on any issue with their adversary, the RSF. Both parties are engaged in a two – year civil war which caused one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world, displacing more than 12 million people. Sudan is currently plagued by a renewed cholera wave, which has so far taken the lives of more than 2 thousand people while more than 100 thousand cases have been documented. Al – Burhan’s comments arrive after he met with US Africa envoy, Massad Boulos, in Switzerland, as the US has initiated mediating efforts for ending the civil war. Last week, Sudan’s military documented Colombian mercenaries fighting for the RSF and announced the downing of an UAE aircraft reportedly delivering equipment to the RSF. Humanitarian organizations have also reported on documented cases of extrajudicial killings conducted by Sudan’s military in the past couple of weeks within the country’s capital, Khartoum.

Impact: The military’s rejection of a potential compromise spells continuation of the armed conflict and even more rapid deterioration of the humanitarian crisis in the country. The meeting between Boulos and Al Burhan signals the existence and the expansion of foreign led peace initiatives which have so far resulted in no concrete resolutions or outright proposal rejections either by the RSF or Sudan’s military. The compromise rejection by the military and the formation of parallel government by the RSF widened the gap between both sides, making diplomatic engagement highly unachievable. The country’s economic potential remains isolated, while making it a consistent target for foreign influence and support for either the RSF or Sudan’s army.
